The shower head that you choose is a key element if your bathroom design as it adds both function and style. Whether you want a minimalistic, sleek, contemporary shower head or a larger shower head for a rain-style experience, there are plenty of options to choose from.

It’s also vital to select the most appropriate shower head for your home’s water pressure as well as a shower head the offers the choice of spray patterns that suit your tastes. Here, we examine the different shower head holder options on the market today and look at what you need to keep in mind while making your final purchasing decision.

The different types of shower head

There are two different types of shower head on the market for you to choose from. The first is the handset type and the second is the rain shower head type. Let’s look a little more closely at both of these options.

Handset:

A handset shower head comes on a hose and is the traditional style of shower head that you may immediately think of when you conjure up the image of a shower in your mind. Handset shower heads usually offer a choice of one, two, or three functions or spray patterns to suit your preferences, so you can usually select from a gentler or more powerful experience.

Handset shower heads come in a range of shapes and sizes as well as various different colours, so there’s going to be something that suits every bathroom’s décor and styling. You can use a handset shower head either with or without a slide rail kit, and one of the top advantages of this kind of shower head is how easy it is to replace.

Since handset shower heads are also typically a lower cost option, they’re a perfection choice for bathroom renovations being carried out on a budget.

Rain shower heads

Rain shower heads are permanently fixed in place and require an arm to mount them on, which may either be fixed to the wall or the ceiling. Rain shower heads come in 200mm to 400mm sizes as standard and, just like handset shower heads, they also come in many different sizes, shapes and colours to suit all bathrooms.

Although the physical rain shower head itself can easily be replaced, the arm cannot. Usually, rain shower heads are used with concealed shower kits, so they’re harder to install than handset shower heads.

Eco shower heads

Eco shower heads are the latest buzz word in the bathroom industry, but being well-informed about what they are is essential as too many prospective purchasers don’t really understand what they are buying when they opt for this choice.

Although you may have heard about “eco shower heads”, it’s important to understand what they really are. In most cases, so-called eco shower heads are just normal shower heads that come with a flow restrictor already fitted. Flow restrictors can, in fact, be fitted onto any shower head. It’s also essential to realise that no shower head is capable of increasing the flow rate or water pressure in your home. Different spray patterns may, however, give you the feeling of higher water pressure, so if you pair the right spray pattern with a flow restrictor, that’s the best way of creating an eco shower head of your own.

How to choose a shower head

When it comes to choosing the right shower head for your new bathroom, there are several considerations to keep in mind:

  • Shape and style. You can choose from both traditional and modern shower head designs to suit the décor and theming of your bathroom.
  • Shower heads come in a range of finishes including white, matt black, and chrome. You should choose one that complements the other fixtures and fittings in your bathroom.
  • Handsets generally are made from ABS or plastic, although some versions (that are few and far between) come in metal. When it comes to rain shower heads, though, most are made from either metal (typically stainless steel or brass) or ABS. A metal rain shower head is usually the best choice since it has a slimmer profile of just 2 – 3mm as opposed to 15 – 25mm.

What to look out for

There are several things that you may wish to look out for when you’re choosing the right shower head for your newly renovated bathroom.

First, you should consider ease of cleaning. Since your handset is the most handled item in your shower, you need to ensure that the one you’ve chosen is easy to clean and maintain. One of the best finishes is chrome since it’s usually easier to polish and clean than a plastic handset.

While you’re considering ease of cleaning, it’s also important to think about how easy the nozzles will be to clean. Limescale can easily build up inside the nozzles, so you should choose a shower head that comes with rubber easy clean nozzles that make it quicker and easier to get rid of any limescale build up.

Another thing to look out for when choosing the right shower head for you is the guarantee period that comes with your shower head. The longer the guarantee period the better, since a long guarantee period is a sign that the manufacturer trusts in their product’s ability to stand the test of time.

One final consideration to keep in mind will only apply if you’re replacing an existing shower head. You’ll need to check the inlet thread size before choosing a new shower head to replace your existing one or you’ll find that your new one won’t fit.

With all of the above information in mind, you’ll be in the best position to select the right shower head to suit your bathroom, your budget, and your preferences. Whether you want to go for a handset shower head or a rain shower head, there is sure to be a shower head holder that meets your requirements.
