When you’re ready to choose the right type of basin for your bathroom, there are plenty of different choices to pick from. Gone are the days when only pedestal basins were out there. Now, there is a host of different styles to suit all kinds of homes. Semi-recessed basins are rapidly becoming popular amongst homeowners, but what is this basin style, and is it right for your home? Here, we take a closer look at this type of washbasin in our comprehensive buying guide.

What is a semi recessed basin?

Semi-recessed basins are partway between fully recessed basins in a vanity unit and a countertop basin. While it sits on a unit, it hangs or projects over the front instead of being fitted fully into the countertop. Generally used on fitted furniture, a semi-recessed basin allows you to opt for slimmer furniture than the depth of the basin you want, and since these basins come in a range of designs and shapes, you can easily find one that works well in your bathroom.

What’s the difference between a semi recessed and a fully recessed basin?

While fully recessed basins are cut into a worktop, in a similar way to a kitchen sink, semi-recessed basins protrude from the front of the unit.

When do you use a semi recessed basin?

In most cases, semi-recessed basins are used on fitted furniture if a bigger basin is required alongside a slimmer cabinet. Since there are so many different sizes and shapes of semi-recessed basin available on the market today, you can easily select one that adds style and elegance to your bathroom. Semi-recessed basins are also a perfect choice to fit onto the top of boxing in, especially beside back to wall toilets that have a boxed in cistern.

What else do I need to consider?

Some of the key considerations to keep in mind when choosing whether to buy a semi-recessed basin for your bathroom include whether or not this style of basin is what you’re looking for in your room. Semi-recessed basins are very understated, and that allows you to make more of a feature of your furniture.

You should also consider the depth of the furniture that you’ll be fitting the basin into. You’ll need the furniture to be a minimum of 20mm deeper than the basin’s fitted part.

Are semi recessed basins easy to fit?

Unfortunately, semi-recessed basins aren’t quick or easy to fit. In fact, of all the different types of basins on the market today, they’re actually the most difficult to install as both the front plinth and the worktop must be cut out to the correct shape in order to fit the basin in place. Nevertheless, once they have been fitted they look fantastic! Therefore, hiring the services of a professional fitter is essential if you decide to opt for a semi-recessed basin so that you can be sure that the job will be done properly and your bathroom will look its best.
